Xmas 2011

The Browns have had a very exciting weekend! Yesterday, we went to see Santa Claus on the CTA Holiday Train. We rode the train into the city and had lunch at Nookies (also known as Milkies and Snookies). Ben and Leify both loved being on the train! Mom and Dad loved having brunch in Lakeview!

Upon returning home, Mom, Ben and Leif rushed directly to a friend's birthday party, where Ben got to eat pizza and cake and ride around the gym on a scooter train!

The best part of the weekend, though, was of course Santa's early visit. Thanks so much, Santa, for agreeing to visit Ben and Leify's house a week early. They just loved the toys you brought! Especially the Handy Manny build and destroy crane and city hall.

Check out photos of our adventures here:

God's House

Yesterday, Ben and I were playing at our neighbor's house and she had a Noah's Ark toy.  After ascertaining that Noah's Ark carries animals, not pirates, Ben really wanted to hear the story.  I told my version.  During lunch, we found another version on the iPad and read it together.  Ben continually asked, "What did God say?"

When we finished reading, Rosie had arrived to babysit.  Ben wanted to read Noah's Ark again, but I had to take the iPad with me.  Ben's solution: "Rosie should buy her OWN iPad so we can read Noah's Ark."

This morning, he was again asking about what God says, and what we say to God.  When I dropped him off at pre-school (in a church), he wanted to know if it was God's house.  We talked about churches, synagogues and mosques all being God's house.  Thanks Ben for the great opening to talk about different religions, gratitude, and prayer.

He is also really into the "worker candle" in our Hanukkah book.

So much fun to be discussing big questions with Ben as we launch into an interfaith season of holiday celebrations.

Mama

Amazing Boys

These photos are from a few weeks ago... we got some other great photos in a shoot w/ Yusef yesterday, which I'll share soon.  But, just want to record a few things before they fly out of my mind and we're on to the next thing.

Ben, Dad and I are so proud of you and impressed by all the connections you make, all the language you use.  The other day, when I was pumping on one side and nursing Leify on the other, you said, "Mom, you're doing two things at once."  Then you smiled and added, laughing, "You can't do two things at once!  That's silly!"

Last week at the bank, you counted out the six coins I had in a coin purse.  You also turned clear plastic stands for marketing materials into shovels and loaders to move around coins and crayons.  And you impressed the Latina banker by saying, "Abajo" en espanol.

When playing on the floor in the playroom, you having an ever-running narrative, and all the trucks talk to each other, with full quotes.  Many are drawn directly from books (especially the Tonka "Chuck and Friends" book and iPad app., but other books too).  Some are your spontaneous creation.  A lot of the conversations involve towing, needing help, etc.  This morning you thanked me for helping you with something and then said, "I couldn't have done it without you, Mom."  Thanks to Tonka for that line!

But, today something new happened.  You've been asking me for a few days now what different pages in books say, pointing to the words.  Today, you did it twice on the cover of a book -- I can't even remember what book now, but you pointed at "The" -- the first word in the title -- and asked, "What does that say?"  I told you.  Then you pointed to "the" in lowercase, later in the title and said, "What does that say?"  "The."  My heart skipped a little: the small euphoria of watching you tread just a bit closer to reading.  Before, you were focused on memorizing books you heard.  Now you're beginning to ask about what these individual words do.  Another way to use your two favorite questions, "What is that?"  "What does it DO?"

Leify, I fear you'll think we hardly even noticed you as a baby, in comparison to all our posts about Ben.  Not so!  You are such an incredible, agreeable, sweet little guy.  We just can't stop talking to you, playing with you, pretending to body slam you onto your brother (you think that's really funny).  You have a great, uproarious belly laugh.  Your little bottom curls so cute.  I can't keep my hands off of you!  You are doing a zillion new things:
-- You can't sit up unsupported yet, but you are learning how to crawl.  You've been scooting for a few weeks (scooting backward into corners is one of your favorite activities).  You've been doing planks and downward dog, and now you've been getting up on hands and knees (so, so, so CUTE) and rocking back and forth.  Grandpa says he saw you take one crawl step forward.  You love to be on your tummy playing with toys, scooting after them, swiveling in circles -- and up on all fours trying to crawl.

-- You started eating!  You've tried broccoli (you like it!), chicken, cheerios, avacado, apple sauce (yum!), a green bean and toast.

-- You love, love, love your family: Mama, Daddy, and Ben.  Nothing makes me happier than seeing the two of you together, wrestling and hugging, with you wide-mouthed, belly-laughing, unrestrained joy at ANY attention from your big brother.  Ben deigning to play with you and tell you he loves you and trying to be gentle for a little while, small snatches of each day.  "I want my baby.  Give me my baby," your brother says, sitting up, arms outstretched.

You're impressing other young boys, too.  A three-year-old at the mall yesterday pointed at you and told his dad, "I want to buy that baby."  Just so you know, we didn't offer a price.

I love you!

The Woad Song

Check out Ben singing his favorite new song... and a classic favorite from the pubs in England.  (Don't worry, it's dark at the beginning... video will get brighter).

Thanks to Grandad for teaching it to Jane and Noah.  The spinning while singing is Ben's own addition.

Here are the actual lyrics (our family version -- here are the full lyrics):

Romans came across the channel
All dressed up in tin and flannel
Half a pint of woad per man'll
Clothe us more than these.

Woad's the stuff to show men.
Woad to scare your foemen.
Boil it to a brilliant hue
And rub it on your back and your abdomen.

Ancient Briton ne'er did hit on
Anything as good as woad to fit on
Neck or knees or where you sit on.
Bottoms up to woad!

Reading in Bed

Dear Ben,

I just have to share: Some nights, when we put you to bed, you now enjoy reading to yourself after we've finished our stories together.  You're still sorting out just how this works.  Last night, you asked for your light off only to discover that with the light off and the door closed, you couldn't see the book.  So you asked me to turn the light back on.  Sometimes you just look at the pictures, but last night, I heard you telling yourself a story out loud.  But, my absolute favorite part of this new routine is that you read to yourself for a little while and then YOU TURN OFF THE LIGHT YOURSELF AND GO TO SLEEP.

You are the best.

Love,
Mom

Roll Over

Yesterday, Leify rolled over from back to front!  Repeatedly.  And last night, he was up CONSTANTLY.  Ben was up at 5:15 today screaming that he wanted to go downstairs and squeeze medicine (vitamins) into his milk.  This is followed by a day full of whining and crying in which Ben also made me repeat a story about Lightning McQueen getting a flat tire about 80 times.

My guess: the boys know I'm going back to work today and a) are trying to make it easier for me by being extra difficult AND b) are trying to make me suffer for going back by refusing to let me sleep.

Leify, thanks for rolling over yesterday when I could see you instead of waiting to do it for the first time in front of grandma and grandpa.  Leif and Ben, I will miss you today.  I love you so, so much.  Even when you whine and induce me to tell you madeup McQueen stories until I think I may go insane. :)

Love,
Mama

Grateful

Again, here I am with a two month old, up too late at night but brimming with good feelings and gratitude for my boys and the wonderful people I have to share this experience with.  So grateful to still have my wonderful circle of moms (and some of the dads, too!) from the Bloom Babies birth class.  Thank goodness we defied our birth class instructor who wanted us to stay on task and instead started laying the foundation for a wonderful web of support.  And, thank goodness we opened up the circle to include other new mamas who weren't in the class... some of those mamas are among my favorite people now.

And, I'm grateful for the parents from pre-school, and the neighbor mom who stopped by with her family today to introduce themselves and swap contact information (I cornered her husband on Saturday when he dared to walk by my house with a two-year-old, and he said he'd stop by with his family, and they did).  What a fantastic neighborhood we've moved into, with so many families that seem interesting and kind, and friendly.

And then I have these boys.  Ben is having some challenges lately -- the strong emotions of being two.  But yesterday we were sitting outside in front of the house and some older elementary school boys rode by on their bikes.  "Where's their mommies?" asked Ben.  I explained that they were big kids and they could go places without their mamas.  "Would you want to go anywhere without your mama, Ben?"  "No."  And he wouldn't.  As long as he has his mama -- and his mama's belly button -- my little guy is all set.  Poor thing, though.  He so wanted to sleep in Mama's bed for his nap today, but I wouldn't let him.  He posed a very strong argument in favor of sleeping in my bed versus his or the guest bed (which he thinks of as Grandma and Grandpa's bed).  With a sly smile, Ben informed me that he had to sleep in Mama's bed because it is "just right."  If you are a fan of "Godieyocks" as Ben is you will understand the compelling nature of that argument.

And the second boy, Leify, is totally edible.  All the little neighborhood girls who have been ooing and ahing over him agree.  He has such a great big sweet smile.  And, it's an easy smile.  I have never met a soul who enjoyed a clean diaper as much as Leify Brown.  Just anticipation of a fresh diaper when he got on the changing table this afternoon set him off to smiling.  Coaxing out his sweet smiles with conversation, coos and tickles is addictive.  He sure knows how to lure in and reward his mama.  When he ahhs and coos at me, I can feel the vibrations through his whole chest and back.  And, he has these sweet little creases and dimples around his mouth -- and the half-moon eyes.  Little Leify spits out his pacifier to smile at me.  His smiles just pop.  I think we've got a charmer on our hands.

My cup runneth over.

Love,
Mama

Two!

Happy birthday to our loving, energetic, wonderful, talkative son!  We love you!
Leify is happy it's your birthday, too!
Ben, you're so good at blowing out candles (although, I prefer your chosen term from a few weeks ago: "blow OFF candles"), that you blew them out before Marvin could press "record."  You asked for your candles "with fire on them."

Here are more photos of your pre-birthday weekend with both sets of grandparents (and Ezra, Karyn, Lynore and Norman!) and your birthday party.  When was your birthday, Ben?  Check out some of the included videos to find out (Mama will also spill the beans: "In June eleventh" you have been telling us all week).

Leif's Log

Hey, we had a baby! And, if you think about it, we're not that late with this first post. We didn't start Ben's blog until about 6 weeks. We're only 2 weeks later with Baby #2. So, meet our wonderful new son!

Noah and I are thrilled to announce the arrival of Leif Holtan Brown, named in loving memory of our grandmothers, Eldora (Holtan) Murray and Lorna Bode. Eldora, of course, was endlessly proud of her fine Norwegian heritage and Lorna had the courage and drive to serve in the British land army during WWII and then to sail with her young family across the sea in order to resettle in Canada and ultimately Massachusetts. Hence, we thought it appropriate to name Leif after the most famous Norwegian adventurer and heralded first European to land on North America, Leif Ericson.

Leif had an adventurous entry into life himself. He was born at 12:44 am on April 15, 2011 in the lobby of Evanston Hospital after less than 3 hours of labor. He arrived in the world only moments after we managed to get through the door of the hospital, narrowly avoiding a birth at curbside. We hear that the security guard on duty may be scarred for life.Ben has already been to visit his new baby brother. We are all doing great! Leif weighed in at 7 lbs, 12 oz. and 20 inches long.

Here is the original set of birth photos we posted for friends and family, including an adorable one of Mom, Leif and Ben. Here is the complete set of Leify's hospital photos.

We've had an amazing 8 weeks so far with our expanded family. Ben is totally in love with his little brother. We're getting a little bit of sleep. Life's good. More photos and stories to come.

Love,
Anne

22 Months

Dear Ben,

You are officially 22 months old today, but I have been thinking about this post for weeks. Sweetheart, you are just the most fun ever! You keep getting better and better. There are a few things that I definitely want to remember about you at this age:

You are blossoming with language.  As I've reported in previous posts, you have a prodigious memory and love to talk.  In the past week or so, you've started putting together three-word sentences.  This week, you were trying to climb the stairs while carrying a Walgreen's bag with Dad's shaving cream in it.  I took it from you so you could be safe on the stairs.  You turned to me and said, quite clearly, "Give it back." Yesterday at dinner, Dad made you a bowl of frozen peas.  He put some on your plate, but that wasn't good enough for you.  Reaching toward the bowl, you said, "I wan it."  And, Baby, you got it.  If it's frozen peas you're after, we're sure not going to refuse.

A favorite activity of mine is playing "Fill in the blanks" with you while we're reading books.  I pause before finishing a sentence and you fill in the missing word.  Including words as big as "proclamation" from Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed.

As evidenced by the photo below, you're also exceedingly goofy and silly these days!  You think lots of things are a total riot.  I've had to curb my use of the word "naughty," because if I say it, then whatever it is you are doing becomes exactly what you want to do.  You also use this word spontaneously.  The other day, you were eating a piece of toast with peanut butter, and you kept walking out of the kitchen into the dining room.  I would call you back and give you the eye, and you would come back for a second, then smile huge, and step back out of the kitchen.  After doing this a few times you were almost bent over with giggles, looked right at me, and giddily pronounced, "Naughty!"

You are quite opinionated about what you want to do these days.  And, here's what you typically want to do: Wear "jammies!" (with the accent on "ies"). Go "outside" (with the accent on "out").  "Washing" "dishes" in the sink.  You could stand at the sink washing dishes all day long.  Go pee-pee on the potty.

Thanks to Grandma and Bop Levy, we have a new toilet, tiles and paint job in the first floor powder room (a lovely birthday present to Noah and me).  This is very compelling to you and you have now convinced Dad and me at least four times to take off your pants and diaper and let you sit on the potty. (Twice, this has actually resulted in some pee-pee.)  The potty feeds right into your great love of routines.  From the Elmo Goes to the Potty coloring book Laura gave you (and that you quickly became obsessed with) you know the drill: Use the potty.  Wipe.  Flush.  Wash hands.  You like to repeat the first three steps endlessly.

You are also obsessed with my belly and your baby brother inside it.  You just love babies.  You talk about Zella ("Zeda" to you) all the time.  You tell me how she is a "baby" and you "rocked" her in her carseat.  You really want your brother to come out.  You frequently offer to "cut" open my belly with a "knife."  Glad we've progressed from "scissors."  This week, we went to the store together so you could buy a gift for your baby brother.  You chose a carrot rattle and a bunny rattle.  The lady at the store wrapped them for you and you paid with my credit card.  Then you carried the bag with the gift down Central Street.  To everyone who passed you, you turned and said, "Carrot."  Every few steps you stopped to peek in your bag to make sure the gift was still there."  Ever since, you've been telling folks that you bought your baby brother a "carrot."  It was a bit confusing to Daddy since "carrot" sounds remarkably similar to another favorite expression of yours, "Carry-it," which can mean either you want to carry something, or you want us to carry you.

I would be remiss if I failed to mention a few more delightful things you've done lately.

First, you ran all the way home from Central Street after dinner with Nanna and Papa when they recently visited.  That's at least five long blocks.  You were smiling your huge, cheek-stretching smile the whole way.  When you saw two bunnies to chase, you ran all the faster. "Bunnies!"  Every once in a while you would stop to rest, curling down into the toddler squat, your hands on your knees, butt almost touching the ground, before sprinting forward again.

You just loved your visit with Nanna and Papa and were very sad to see them go.  You've been asking for them ever since.  We had to spend a lot of time comforting you after they left, and you continue to tell us, "Nanna.  Papa.  Airport.  Airplane."  Yesterday, you told me that you were going to go to the airport on "Tuesday" in order to visit them.

I also discovered an activity that can divert you from even your favorite activity of washing dishes at the sink.  This week, after you helped me make enchiladas (and, you really have been helping in the kitchen lately.  You are a pro at unwrapping and washing tomatillos, placing chunks of chicken and grated cheese on tortillas -- even if you called the grated cheese "rice" -- and trying to roll them up) we made birdies out of cotton balls, paper and glue.  You were so excited about the glue that you fell off your chair reaching for it.  This was a pretty rough tumble -- you fell on your side and head and rolled away.  You cried at first.  But the thrilling magnetism of glue pulled you from your sadness and you were back at the table before I could finish wiping away your tears.  We made six birdies, we put them in an egg tray and counted them together.  Six birdies.  Six empty spots in the tray.

When Dad came home, you screamed, "Birdies!"  (Your r's still don't come through so well, so Dad had no idea what you were saying.)  You rushed with Dad to the playroom.  So overcome with excitement were you that you couldn't see the birdies perched on the windowsill.  You dropped to your stomach and began to do an army crawl, a Navy Seal searching for those birdies among the blocks and puzzle pieces on the playroom rug.

The following morning, when Grandma showed up to babysit, you spun from the sink where you were washing and practically fell off the chair shouting, "Birdies!  Birdies!"  A similar scene ensued.  Once we successfully located the birdies, you excitedly told Grandma, "Cut!  Glue!  Bird-ees!"  Man are you proud of those birdies!

"Making Noise!"  Or "Make a noise."  Finally, a great debate is ranging between me and Dad.  For a few weeks now, you've been obsessed with "Noise!"  You tell us when you hear a noise.  You tell us when you make a noise.  You go to great lengths to make noise whenever you can.  Using my cell phone cord against the radiators is one of your favorite ways.  I think you're saying "Making noise."  Dad insists its a three-word sentence, "Make a noise."  I'm totally right, but soon you'll probably start saying "Make a noise," just to prove me wrong.

Sweet boy, I could go on and on about all the lovely, fun things you do these days.  You are so sweet and loving.  It totally makes up for the fact that I have to spend all day threatening to "help" you do things rather than having you do them by your "self" in order to get anything done at all.  It totally makes up for the raging meltdown you had following your nap yesterday where Dad and I just couldn't figure out how to help you calm down (some milk and pretzels eventually helped). It totally makes up for your insistence on getting the "yittle" (little) "clear" bottle instead of the sippy cups you're supposed to be drinking out of.

I so wish you could just stay this age forever.  And, I'm so compelled to see what comes next.

Love,
Mama

We're so proud

Ben, your memory for language continues to impress.  At dinner tonight, Dad was wowing you with a combination of curling his tongue and burping.  You kept saying "More, more, more" (which still sounds like, "moh, moh, moh" and then you would jubilantly scream, "Burp!"  After rolling my eyes and telling Dad I was going to have to call his dad to let him know just what he'd gotten us into (I don't think Noah learned this behavior from Jane), I took a gulp of water, Dad said something else, and I started laughing uncontrollably with a mouth full of water.  I was laughing so hard, I had to spit it out in my bowl lest I choke.

That's when you showed your language and memory prowess.  Despite not having used or heard the word in weeks, maybe even months, you laughed, pointed at your mama, and authoratatively stated, "Puke."  Thanks, Ben.  You and Dad sure make me proud.  Can't wait to add a third boy to the mix next month.

Here are the boys in a recent shot with one of their heroes.  (This is also a good demonstration of how Ben prefers to leave his jacket and hat on for a LONG time after arriving in any new place.  The only reason he took off his mittens, I bet, was because they were impeding access to his snack pack.)

Mom

Some photos and some things we don't want to forget

Check out some photos from this Sunday's Mommy Group.  The last one of Ben sitting in the princess chair and typing on the "puter" may be my favorite.

A few things we don't want to forget:

~Ben has figured out who he is.  He is "Ben!" although it often sounds more like "Bun!"  If you ask "Who's in there" when you go to get him from his nap, he will tell you, "Ben!"  He also uses it as a possessive, pointing to objects and saying "Ben" to let you know it is his, or he wants it.

~Other fun new phrases include "Come on," "Fire," "Fixit" and just a whole slew of others.  We can't keep up.  He loves telling stories ad nauseum about events in his life, such as the time the "man" came over in a "shuck [truck]" to fix the "heat."  "Man. Shuck. Heat."  I mean, it's a pretty compelling narrative, no?  Who wouldn't want to tell his mama that story 50,000 times?

~Can't forget my absolute favorite: "Sop [Stop]" said with hand extended.  He learned it from Dora and Boots, but he could just as easily be singing "Stop in the Name of Love."  I cannot get over how sweet it is when Mama or Dad is tickling him and he says, "Sop, Sop," little arm pushing out of our hug.

~Today, Ben told me "self" when I tried to put on his pants.  And, he did manage to put them on almost all the way by himself.  The shirt was a little harder -- so many holes!  He also put his hat on by himself -- with the mittens still inside of it.

~Ben also subverted my attempt to skip the music portion of pre-school.  I had this whole plan about how we would just spend the whole hour in the bike room playing.  But, when the first cohort came in from music and his beloved teacher Merle announced that anyone who hadn't been to music could now go, Ben sprang into immediate action, climbing out of the rocking boat, grabbing my leg and emphatically saying, "Up.  Go.  Sing."  And, he had a great time at music.  He got to play with musical sticks and shaker eggs.  He got to jump.  He was an excellent hand-clapper and head patter.  Who am I to keep my son from such wonder?

~Tonight, Ben had me sing the Valentine song "I love coffee, I love tea, I love X and X loves me," repeatedly.  Who were his favorite names to insert this time around?  None other than his beloved Bop, and Granma.

A few things we do want to forget:

~He's back to waking up at 5:30.  Arggg!

~Continual whining because he wants to watch Dora and/or Elmo.  Constantly.

Love,
Anne

Happy New Year Ben!

Dear Ben,

Your dad and I are sitting around just past midnight on New Year's Eve talking about what a sweet little man you are.  We had Raz, Yeliz and Ilyas over for dinner, and you and Ilyas tore around the house like two crazy men -- or, um, little boys.  You were so delighted to have a friend over.  Except when Ilyas dared to do your thing in the play room.  He got up on your stool to bang on the top of your tool bench with a hammer.  Your little lower lip started to quiver and then you started to cry -- so sad that someone else was doing your special thing.  Luckily, you recovered and by the end of the night, the two of you had cooked side by side at your stove/sink combo, eaten grapes together out of your mini-colander, sat on the bottom step of our stairs together, somewhat successfully shared trucks, pirate ships, crayons and various other toys.  And, at the end, you were hugging and kissing goodbye.

We cannot fully express what a delight you are to us.  You have such a lovely disposition and personality.  Below are a few recent pics of you with your dad -- followed by one of you singing (and hand motioning) to Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.  You have also been really into Pat-a-Cake lately.  We are trying to capture you patting and rolling on video, but it's not so easy, as you get very distracted by the video camera.  You want to watch the videos before they are created.  But, this morning, you woke up doing the hand motions for Pat-a-Cake (before 6 am).  It took me a few minutes to catch on that you were "patting" and that "fast, fast" was part of the song, not your typical entreaty for me to get out of bed already.

We love you, love you, love you munchkin, and can't wait to see what 2011 will bring!

Love,
Mom & Dad

P.S. A few additional notes: You've graduated to more 2 syllable words (and if a word has more than 2, you like to pick just 2 to say).  This included you pointing at Mom and Dad in bed this morning and saying "Jewish."  I'm awed by the new words you learn every day.

Dear Ben,

Happy New Year!  You are a very special little man.  You make us very happy.  Pls keep it up in 2011.

Love,
Da

Ben & "Da"
Such a helpful man.  "Hook hook hook"
"Up above the world so high" (up up up!)
